Hey guys, look! There's this kinda cool blog about gamebooks that somebody left lying around here. I love gamebooks!
Aw, it doesn't seem like anybody has done much with it in a while. Maybe, if nobody minds, I'll just write a post or two...
So yeah... sorry for all the silence. In the last few weeks, I have A) gotten a new job that's pretty time intensive, B) started dating a very cool girl, and C) been very focused on finishing my submission for the Windhammer Prize.
You can see why I might have been a bit busy ;)
Anyway, the main thing I would like to say is, "Windhammer Prize Fuck Yeah!"
So, one week ago today I submitted my entry for the 2012 Windhammer Prize for Short Gamebook Fiction. A few days later I found that there are no less than 21 other contestants this year, an unprecedented number and something I am delighted to find out (even if it lowers my chances!)
Today, the voting phase of the contest officially opened, and all 22 entries are now live on Wayne Densley's website. If you haven't checked it out yet, I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
May glory and renown follow all who have entered there!
Just finished your gamebook entry. Pretty enjoyable. Although for some reason I had to constantly remind myself that my character was male; I kept thinking Alex was female, for some reason. The whole sacrifice-one-person-to-save-the-world ending was pretty intense. While I buy into the idea of the good of the many outweighing the good of the few, I also think that poor Alex is going to be highly traumatized, having to carry the guilt of his decision for the rest of his life. But he'll probably also appreciate life more. Every clean drink of water, every blade of grass, every fruit-bearing tree will remind him that none of this would be hear without the Geo-Cure.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the comment. Knowing that the story reached you, that the world comes alive enough for you to really think about it... that's the highest praise I could ask for.
DeleteDid you get a chance to mess around with (or unlock) any of the other possible endings?
Not yet; I want to give every Windhammer game one play-through before trying any of the games a second time. But yours is on the short list of games that I'm actually interested in playing again. And I've only got three or four more Windhammer games to go. :D
ReplyDeleteYou are a gamebook playing maachine!
DeleteI know, right? I haven't had time to get through that many of them. I think I'm on my second :P I haven't even read the intros to all of them yet. I've got some catching up to do!
DeleteI wish there was some central location where everybody could go to discuss the gamebooks. I mean, in a way I suppose that might not be that fair, but it would also be nice to have a chance to talk about them in some sort of communal way.
What can I say? I did homework for maybe an hour yesterday, and then did nothing else but gamebooks until about 10:30pm. And then I dreamed about gamebooks. :P Go figure.
DeleteHah, go figure. Like when I've been playing starcraft too long; I close my eyes and see mutalisks.
DeleteDo you have any entry in, yourself?
Sadly, no. I was focused on the 2012 Solitaire Print and Play Contest, although my entry was, indeed, a gamebook: Wings of Lightning. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/822376/wip-wings-of-lightning-pnp-solitaire-2012-contes.
ReplyDeleteOut of 48 games, it placed eighth overall and won prizes for best large game and best paragraph-based game. Not bad for my first completed gamebook.
I definitely need to enter Windhammer next year, though! I've discovered that I really enjoy writing gamebooks. When you've finished working through this year's entries, you can check out my current gamebook project, Traitors' Path, here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/851087/wip-traitors-path-a-solo-gamebook
Excellent! I actually came across Wings of Lightning, mentioned on another blog, and was wondering how to reach the author. Here you are :)
DeleteI'm still looking for a chance to play it. For me, it turned out the requirement of having a deck of cards turned out to be an obstacle. I actually don't usually keep a deck of cards around, and so far, the effort of procuring one has not been surmounted. But it looks like a cool system! Do you have somewhere I can leave you feedback whenever I do get to it?
The Wings of Lightning URL I posted above not leads to a discussion forum about the game. Feel free to post feedback there. You can also post feedback to my blog, but I don't check that as frequently.
DeleteIn retrospect, that was kind of obvious :P Cool, I'll head over there whenever I get a chance to try it out.
DeleteI just finished Legend of the Zendari and had a great time with it! I've always wanted to see a real, anime-style mecha gamebook. The characters have depth, which makes interacting with them much more fun. I think I've found a handful of pop-culture references, but I'm still far from beating the challenge. I'll have to check again once I've made it through the rest of the entries.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Glad you enjoyed it :) I haven't read Final Payment yet, but I'm almost there on the list ;)
DeleteIf you like the mecha theme, then just wait until the illustrations are revealed, after the contest. I lucked out in finding an artist capable of drawing beautiful anime-style mecha.
I look forward to hearing how many of the references you can find :)
I'm also intending to play all Windhammer books during the next weeks, but I've only done four of them so far. Played Zendari yesterday, liked it a lot but I ran out of time when I think I was close to the end. But it's ok, I will play it again once I've tested all the others in the list. Gonna try to spot some of the references then too. Good job!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it! I'd love to hear what happened in your playthrough, if you feel like sharing :)
DeleteI suppose the game is quite linear in the beginning. I chose the Mycenae and followed the guy to help him blast the aliens in the base attack. I went to the first ruin site and helped the injured man. Then I went to the third ruin site and found out the location of the cure, met Minna there and searched the Zendari ship until I ran out of time.
